Simple and chic and elegant and sophisticated: meet the shirtdress.

Good evening everyone! Sorry for the late posting hour... I wanted to capture this beautiful golden light, and I couldn't wait for tomorrow (surprise: I'm leaving for Blaine in the morning to hang out in a beach house and run a half-marathon). I am so in love with this off-white shirtdress – it shows off even the palest tan, and the waist tie means it's flattering on exactly every single body type. And it has pockets. I especially love the combination of white and gold for summer, so the buttons on this dress are so fresh and make me feel white-hot for August.

I initially contemplated wearing this outfit with peep-toe pumps, but because this was my daytime look, and I wanted a bit of a cool French-girl vibe, I instead chose navy lace-up flats and a matching bag, and tied a bold silk scarf around my neck. The scarf trick is a classy answer to the choker trend of late – a good choice for when you want to give a nod to trends, but still remain classic and sophisticated. If your hair is long enough, I suggest tucking your hair into the scarf for a bit of a chic undone Parisian touch. And if the single cuff isn't enough glamour for you, add some scarf-brushing hoop earrings.

I recommend you all go out and buy yourself a nice mini shirtdress (I've already extolled the virtues of both a printed maxi version and a fun sleeveless one). It gives you a nice hourglass shape, even if you've got zero curves like me, because it cinches the waist and skims the rest of the body; rendered in white or off-white in a silky fabric, it's an incredibly sultry piece, especially if you button it up at the top but leave a couple undone at the hem; and it can be dressed up or down for basically any event. And it can easily transition to any season: over tights for fall, with a lightweight jacket for spring, or worn open over trousers with a cardigan and parka for winter. (Also: pockets).

What's your summer hero piece?
